This is a brief overview of what we experienced with our son's diagnosis of autism during the Autism Awareness Month of April, 2017. Disheartened by all the "Light It Up Blue" propaganda, it is intended to dispel the myth the mainstream media has presented about autism spectrum disorder and uncover the truth about those living with lower-functioning autism and the effects on entire families. The Autism Truth that remains is that a huge percentage of persons affected will not have adequate language and life skills to one day independently care for themselves. The numbers are staggering.

It is truly difficult to explain to others what we live through on a daily basis especially with all this blue distraction so prevalent now. We are living in a sea of what I call "The Spectrum Deception" because amongst all this blue-washing, there are still many people who are unaware of the unedited struggles families living with autism face. So, consider this work your "Autism Month In Review."

This book is not a list of statistics. It is not about the root causes of autism (I do believe there are many of them) or potential diets, therapies, or cures. There are plenty of wonderful books and different theories out there. Please read if you want to step into our autism life as recorded for one month. This is the REAL DEAL, THE AUTISM NO ONE SPEAKS ABOUT. Be prepared. It is shocking, emotional and raw. Inspiring and, at times, joyful. In our home, and in the homes of many of our terrific friends, there is autism awareness every day of every year. However insightful, what you will read here is just a brief snapshot into our world, and the world of some terrific families we know and admire.

I am writing my first Amazon book review, having just finished Laura Licata Sullivan's Another Autism Awareness Month. It reads like a journal of sorts, the recorded observations of a family's day-to-day life during the 'Autism Awareness Month' of April 2017. It is a beautiful read on many levels, but is also the kind of book that can keep a person up at night. Literally. Laura's book asks more questions than it answers, but this is often the nature of autism. Questions relating to frustration ('what happens when accommodations fall apart?'), to fear ('what to do when our child walks off at 3:00 AM and we can't find him?'), to joy ('our son was invited to Prom, now what?'), and perhaps the most difficult question, 'what will happen to our child when I am gone?' Being familiar with Laura's background as a poet, I was happily surprised to see her book on autism interspersed with poetry as well. Anecdotes and poetry from friends and family members living with autistic loved ones are also provided. Lines from a friend upon her own son's diagnosis stand out: "He's just like me/I'm just like him/Two peas in a therapy pod/Look at us spin." Laura has a natural way of bringing the reader into the world of her family, and Another Autism Awareness Month almost demands the reader to take the broader view and find joy in life's tiny pleasures that would otherwise be taken for granted.

Another Autism Awareness Month The Spectrum Deception eBook Laura Licata Sullivan Reviews

Such an amazing book, an honest and sincere look into the life with an autistic child/man. How brave and strong the authors and their families are, a great read.
This book is so awesome! I love how real it is. Thank you Laura for sharing Jack's life with us. Thank you for allowing me to contribute to this wonderful project. I read it as soon as I received it. Absolutely beautiful
Very manageable book to read-once I started, I couldn't put it down. It is a window into the world that the Sullivan family lives on a daily basis. Eye-opening and honestly written. I would recommend this book to anyone that knows someone who has been affected by autism, as it is truly enlightening.
This book is a must read for everyone. It gives a glimpse into the world of a person with autism and his family. People need to be educated about this and show more compassion and understanding. The judgment and disapproval faced by this family is heart-breaking. Love and compassion are needed.
Hi my name is rev tom, i've been ministering to the "Sullivan Family of 5" for years. I've also been available in caring friendship to a number of austism families. This book is a great quick read into the daily penance, daily small miracles, and tragedy of caregivers. Saint Laura has taken strides in her family ensuring that my buddy Jack is as "HandiCapable" as the rest of us. Bravo Zulu Jack, you still owe me one of your apple pies & hugs 👍
Normally I stay away from books about autism. I read for pleasure and relaxation when I can and reading about autism is not relaxing for me as an Autism Mom. Most books tend to make me either feel guilty for something that I did or did not do for my child; or they leave me feeling hopeless. This book does not do that. It is an honest look into what autism is like for some families. The author acknowledges that it is just a peek into a one month journal of what it is like for this particular family without being preachy or pretending to know what autism is like for any other family. We all know that it is a wide spectrum with every individual unique in their own way, just as every individual without autism is unique. After the journal the end of the book has stories written by other family members, advocates, teachers/therapists and other moms willing to share their story. It is well worth reading and I enjoyed every minute.
As a speech pathologist I have provided therapy to numerous autistic children...each one unique and true individuals. This book not only looks into the life of a student but more importantly the daily experiences of a family. As therapists we understand but do not experience the ups and downs of family life. Ms. Sullivan is so correct when she states autism must be recognized daily. The heartfelt account of a family's joys, sorrows and triumphs permeates this book and is a must read for parents and professionals!
