This is a Victorian manual for extracting essential oils and mixing perfumes, powders and cosmetics. In contains a list of commonly used plants and how to extract their odors, as well as many, many period recipes. A reference work for herbalists, steampunk enthusiasts, lovers of Victorian style, amateur perfumers and historians. I've made many of the recipes myself, and they work very well! (Note: you will have to Google some of the vocabulary, and find a replacement for a few ingredients such as spermaceti.)Product details

The Art of Perfumery G W Septimus Piesse 9781150933486 Books Reviews
I wouldn't necessarily follow the procedures for distilling less common plants (such as honeysuckle), but overall informative.
this book was great and very detailed! it did tend to drag and be a bit old-fashioned but it was written a long time ago, however if you would like to know all about perfume this is the book to read!
If you are into the history of perfume this is for you. I thought it was more of a book on how to make homemade perfume.
good
I was looking to learn more about how to make essential oils for soap making. It gave some ideas but not as useful as I expected.
For fans of fascinating, archaic, obscure texts. Hard to imagine that these procedures were all they had in the old days. Only caveat you may need Wikipedia ready and open, just to look up all the terms/names that have changed since this was written.
Published in 1857, this Victorian book opens with a interesting history of perfumes, and pleads with English industry to start flower farms for the manufacture of perfumes. Then in the next section goes ovr the scents and methods of distillation that were demonstrated in the Crystal Palace 1851 exhibit. A mixture of practical techniques with a long list of essenses. Worth downloading.
